ALOR SETAR: The state government has come under fire for its failure
in managing the state-owned Kolej Universiti Insaniah (Kuin).
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid
(BN Pedu) said the alleged mismanagement had tarnished Kuin's image as
it had failed to obtain the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)
ac-creditation.
As a result, he said, the student enrolment rate for the college had dropped drastically.
“There
are 50 courses being offered by the college, but 12 courses have no
students at all,'' he said when debating the state Budget 2013 at the
state assembly here yesterday.
Mahdzir added that 20 courses at the institution, with a college-university status, had fewer than 10 students.
“The
mismanagement resulted in a waste of money as well. For example, the
state government spends RM430,000 every month just to support a medical
faculty with only 11 students,'' he said.
It was reported that
seven students who graduated with a Bachelor of Quran from Kuin ended up
being rubber tappers, taxi drivers and petrol station workers as their
certificates were not recognised by the MQA.
“One of the parents
told me that Kuin staff had actually submitted the MQA application after
the convocation. The state government should explain the delay,'' he
said.
Mahdzir also questioned how the state government could expect to generate RM150mil in revenue from land premium collection.
“Based
on the previous record, the highest land premium revenue collected for
the past five years was RM58mil,'' he said, adding that the RM150mil
estimated amount was syok sendiri (self-indulgence).
